Translate text

Just Translate is your ideal editor to instantly translate and understand foreign language text by using a web-based translation engine. On that account you need an internet connection to translate your text.

To translate text:

  1. Choose a source language.
  2. Enter your text.
  3. Choose a target language.
  4. Click on the "Translate" button.

Enable the translation service menu item

Just Translate provides a service that enables you to translate text straight out of an external application via the "Services" menu.

With Snow Leopard or later, Services promises to become way more usable: it's accessible from a contextual menu; right-click and there it is. And it's supposed to be sensitive to context: when you open it, only those services relevant to what you're doing or the application you're using should show up. This means, you need to manually enable the translation service of Just Translate, using the Keyboard System Preferences panel.

To activate the Contextual Menu Item:

  1. Open the application menu and choose the item Services Preferences from the Services submenu.

  2. Select the action in the Description list that you want to change. In this case search for the entry "Just Translate...".

  3. Activate the service by activating the check box.
  4. Double-click the characters in the Shortcut column, and press the new key combination that you want to use.
  5. You cannot use each type of key (for example, a letter key) more than once in a key combination.
  6. Quit and restart any applications you're using for the new keyboard shortcut to take effect.
Now you can translate text using the contextual menu.

Known issues

  • A few languages are not supported by the spell checking feature.
  • Some applications do not meet the Apple interface specification for contextual menu extensions. Unfortunately there is no or limited support for translations straight out these applications using the contextual menu.
